What Is British Citizenship Application?
Becoming a British citizen is the final step in most people's immigration journey to the United Kingdom. It grants the right to hold a British passport, vote in all elections, live in the UK permanently without any immigration conditions, and travel or work anywhere in the world as a British national.
For most adult migrants, the path to citizenship runs through Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or Settled Status, and then either naturalisation or a specific registration route depending on individual circumstances.
British citizenship by naturalisation is the standard route for most adults who have lived and worked in the UK. It requires five years of lawful UK residence, or three years if you are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen, plus ILR or Settled Status held for at least 12 months, an absence record within the permitted limits, a pass on both the Life in the UK Test and the English language requirement, and a good character assessment that now includes careful scrutiny of your full immigration and tax history. The Home Office processes applications in approximately three to six months. Naturalisation applications are made using Form AN. Work Permit Cloud's Naturalisation service page provides specific guidance on the form, documentation requirements, absence calculations, referee rules, and the ceremony process for applicants who are ready to apply.
The Hong Kong BN(O) Visa is a distinct, government-created route launched in January 2021 for Hong Kong residents who hold BN(O) status and their eligible family members, including adult children born on or after 1 July 1979, to apply independently from 9 February 2026. The route provides a 5+1 pathway: five years of continuous residence in the UK leading to ILR, followed by British citizenship one year after ILR. No salary threshold or sponsorship requirements apply, and no minimum investment is needed. In November 2025, the Home Secretary confirmed that BN(O) holders will retain the five-year ILR pathway under proposed earned settlement reforms.
Important: The UK government is consulting on earned settlement reform proposals that could affect settlement qualifying periods across multiple routes. If you are eligible for citizenship or settlement under current rules, it is strongly advisable to apply without delay. Work Permit Cloud's IAA-regulated advisors can assess your eligibility and support your application from start to finish. Select your relevant service below.
Apply Now: Proposed Rules May Extend Qualifying Periods
The UK government has proposed an 'earned settlement' reform that could extend the standard ILR qualifying period from 5 to 10 years for most migrants. If you are currently eligible to apply for citizenship or settlement, applying under the current rules without delay is strongly advisable. Work Permit Cloud can assess your eligibility immediately.
3-Year Route for Spouses of British Citizens
If you are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen, you may qualify for British citizenship after just three years of lawful UK residence, with no requirement to have held ILR for 12 months first. Absence limits also differ: no more than 270 days total in the three-year period, and no more than 90 days in the final 12 months.
BN(O) Holders Retain the 5-Year Settlement Pathway
In November 2025, the Home Secretary confirmed that Hong Kong BN(O) Visa holders will retain the five-year ILR pathway under proposed earned settlement reforms. They will not be subject to the proposed 10-year baseline. Thousands of early 2021 applicants are now approaching or have already reached their five-year qualifying date.
Explore our three British Citizenship services below. Our British Citizenship service page covers all routes, eligibility requirements, good character guidance, and the process for both the 5-year and 3-year routes. Our Naturalisation service page is for applicants ready to apply using Form AN: it covers absence calculations, the Day One rule, referee requirements, and the citizenship ceremony process. Our Hong Kong BN(O) Visa service page covers the full 5+1 pathway including the February 2026 adult child expansion, absence limits for ILR, and the November 2025 settlement protection assurance. If you need to establish ILR or EU Settled Status before applying for citizenship, see our UK Settlement Scheme page for full detail.

Our Process
How Our British Citizenship Application Service Works
From eligibility check to citizenship ceremony, we handle every stage of your application
01
Check Your Eligibility
We carry out a full eligibility assessment for your specific circumstances, including which route applies (5-year standard or 3-year spousal), your qualifying date, absence calculation, good character review, and whether ILR or Settled Status is already held. For BN(O) Visa holders, we confirm your 5-year qualifying date and assess any absences against the 180-day limit.
02
Prepare Your Application
We help you prepare your complete Form AN application bundle: supporting documents, absence evidence, Life in the UK Test confirmation, English language evidence, and referee selection guidance. For BN(O) ILR applications, we prepare your Appendix Continuous Residence bundle. We check every detail before submission to reduce the risk of delays or refusal.
03
Submit and Attend Biometrics
We guide you submit your completed application online and advise you on booking your UKVCAS biometrics appointment for fingerprints and a photograph. We are available throughout the processing period, typically three to six months, to respond to any Home Office queries and update you on progress.
04
Citizenship Ceremony and British Passport
On approval, you receive an invitation to attend a citizenship ceremony, which must take place within three months. At the ceremony, you take the Oath of Allegiance, receive your citizenship certificate, and return your BRP if applicable. FAQ
Common questions
How long does it take to get British citizenship?
The Home Office processes most naturalisation applications within three to six months of submission. After approval, applicants are invited to a citizenship ceremony, which must take place within three months of the approval letter. Applications submitted during high-demand periods may take longer. Work Permit Cloud recommends applying as soon as you are eligible to avoid any impact from proposed rule changes.
Can I apply under the proposed earned settlement rules?
As of May 2026, the earned settlement proposals have not been enacted into law. The current qualifying periods still apply: five years for the standard route and three years for spouses and civil partners of British citizens. However, the Home Secretary has indicated implementation in Autumn 2026. Several categories are protected: spouses of British citizens retain the five-year route; BN(O) holders retain the five-year ILR pathway; and Innovator Founder Visa holders retain the three-year pathway. If you are eligible under current rules, applying without delay is strongly advisable.
Do I need to pass the Life in the UK Test for British citizenship?
Yes. Passing the Life in the UK Test is a mandatory requirement for most naturalisation applicants. The test consists of 24 questions covering UK history, law, and values, with a 75% pass mark. Results are valid indefinitely. You do not need to retake the test for citizenship if you already passed it for an earlier ILR application and can provide your reference number. Exemptions apply for applicants aged 65 or over and those with long-term physical or mental conditions.
What is the 'good character' requirement?
The good character requirement applies to all naturalisation applications. The Home Office considers: your full criminal record including overseas convictions and spent offences; any breaches of immigration law during the qualifying period; tax compliance, as applications are cross-referenced with HMRC records; and since 10 February 2025, anyone who entered the UK by irregular means (such as by small boat or concealed in a vehicle) will normally be refused citizenship on good character grounds regardless of elapsed time. Full and honest disclosure of your history is essential before you commit to a non-refundable application.
How do I apply for British citizenship?
For most adults who have been living and working in the UK, the standard route is naturalisation, applying using Form AN after holding ILR or Settled Status for at least 12 months. The full qualifying period is five years of lawful residence, or three years for spouses or civil partners of British citizens. See our British Citizenship and Naturalisation pages for full eligibility detail.
What is the Hong Kong BN(O) Visa citizenship pathway?
The Hong Kong BN(O) Visa offers a 5+1 pathway to British citizenship: five years of continuous UK residence leading to Indefinite Leave to Remain, followed by British citizenship one year after ILR is granted. The adult child route was expanded on 9 February 2026, allowing adult children of BN(O) holders born on or after 1 July 1979 to apply independently. BN(O) holders have been confirmed to retain the five-year ILR pathway under the earned settlement proposals.
