What Are the UK Business Visas?
The United Kingdom offers several distinct immigration routes for overseas entrepreneurs, business owners, and investors who want to establish or grow a business in the UK. Whether you are building a startup, running an established company, or operating as a Turkish national under legacy ECAA rights, the right route depends on your business model, the stage of your venture, and your long-term residence goals.
UK Self-Sponsorship combines the Skilled Worker Visa with a Sponsor Licence to allow business owners to legally sponsor themselves through their own UK company. It is not a separate visa category. It is a structured strategy that uses the existing Skilled Worker framework. For the right applicant, it offers full control over both immigration status and business direction, and leads to Indefinite Leave to Remain after five years. Since July 2025, roles must be at RQF Level 6 (degree level) or above. Home Office scrutiny of self-sponsored arrangements has increased, making expert preparation and compliance planning essential.
The Innovator Founder Visa is the UK's primary route for experienced entrepreneurs bringing a genuinely innovative, viable, and scalable business idea to the UK market. It replaced the earlier Innovator and Start-up routes in April 2023 and requires endorsement from one of the Home Office's approved endorsing bodies before a visa application can be submitted. The route offers a three-year visa with ILR eligibility after three continuous years, one of the fastest settlement pathways for business migrants in the UK. From November 2025, Student visa holders who have completed their course can switch directly into the Innovator Founder route without leaving the UK.
The Turkish Businessperson Visa (ECAA) is a closed route. It has not accepted new applicants since 31 December 2020, following the UK's departure from the European Union. However, Turkish nationals who were already granted leave under the Ankara Agreement can still apply for extensions under Appendix ECAA, and qualify for ILR after five continuous years. Work Permit Cloud assists existing ECAA holders with extensions, settlement applications, and transitioning to alternative routes where appropriate.
Select the service that best applies to your situation below, and our IAA-regulated advisors will guide you through every step of the process. At Work Permit Cloud, our integrated services, including WPC Accountants, WPC Jobs, WPC HR, and WPC Lawyers, provide end-to-end support for your UK business journey, from business planning and role eligibility to compliance and legal representation.
Self-Sponsorship Is a Skilled Worker Strategy
UK Self-Sponsorship uses the existing Skilled Worker Visa framework. It is not a separate visa category. Business owners establish a genuine UK trading company, obtain a Sponsor Licence, and sponsor themselves into a qualifying senior role at RQF Level 6 or above, paying at least £41,700 per year. This leads to Indefinite Leave to Remain after five years.
Innovator Founder Visa Leads to ILR in 3 Years
The Innovator Founder Visa is one of the UK's fastest settlement pathways for business migrants. Endorsement from a Home Office-approved endorsing body is required before a visa application can be submitted. The route offers ILR eligibility after just three continuous years on the route.
Turkish ECAA Route Is Closed to New Applicants
The Turkish Businessperson Visa (ECAA) has been closed to new applicants since 31 December 2020. Existing ECAA holders can still extend their leave under Appendix ECAA and apply for ILR after five continuous years. Work Permit Cloud assists with extensions, settlement, and transitioning to alternative routes.

FAQ
Common questions
What UK business visas are available for overseas entrepreneurs?
Work Permit Cloud covers three main UK business immigration routes. UK Self-Sponsorship uses the Skilled Worker Visa framework to allow business owners to sponsor themselves through their own UK company. It is not a separate visa category but a structured strategy that requires a genuine business, a role at RQF Level 6 or above, and a salary of at least £41,700 per year. The Innovator Founder Visa is for experienced entrepreneurs with a genuinely innovative, viable, and scalable business idea, and requires endorsement from an approved body before the visa can be applied for. It leads to ILR after three years. The Turkish Businessperson Visa (ECAA) is closed to new applicants since 31 December 2020. We assist existing ECAA holders with extensions and ILR.
Is the Turkish Businessperson Visa still available?
No. The Turkish Businessperson Visa closed to new applicants on 31 December 2020. Turkish nationals wishing to establish a new business in the UK should consider the Innovator Founder Visa or the Self-Sponsorship route instead. Existing ECAA holders can still extend their leave and progress to ILR under Appendix ECAA.
What is the difference between the Innovator Founder Visa and the Self-Sponsorship route?
The Innovator Founder Visa is for entrepreneurs starting a new innovative business in the UK. It requires endorsement from a Home Office-approved body and leads to ILR after three years. Self-Sponsorship is for business owners who have or will establish a genuine UK trading company and want to sponsor themselves into a senior, degree-level role within it. It requires a Sponsor Licence, a role at RQF Level 6 or above paying at least £41,700 (from July 2025), and leads to ILR after five years.
Can I come to the UK to start a business without a job offer?
Yes. The Innovator Founder Visa allows you to come to the UK to establish a new business without a job offer, provided your business plan is endorsed by an approved endorsing body as innovative, viable, and scalable. Alternatively, the Global Talent Visa may be available to those with exceptional skills in technology, arts, or academia.
Does a UK business visa lead to permanent residency?
Yes, subject to route. The Innovator Founder Visa leads to ILR after three continuous years, one of the UK's fastest settlement pathways for business migrants. Self-Sponsorship via the Skilled Worker route leads to ILR after five years. Existing Turkish ECAA holders can apply for ILR after five continuous years under Appendix ECAA. Following ILR, British citizenship by naturalisation may be available after 12 months.
