UK Child Student Visa: Independent School Eligibility & Application

The Child Student Visa allows children aged 4 to 17 to study at a UK independent school. Since May 2025, new guardianship rules require a Nominated Guardian and a Letter of Undertaking. We help families prepare compliant applications and navigate the updated welfare requirements.

What Is the UK Child Student Visa?

The Child Student Visa allows children aged between 4 and 17 to study full-time at a licensed independent (fee-paying) school in the United Kingdom. It is distinct from the main Student Visa, which is for students aged 16 and over at universities and further education colleges. The Child Student Visa is specifically and exclusively for UK independent schools — it is not available for state schools.

Children must have received an unconditional offer of a place from a UK independent school that holds a Student Sponsor Licence from the Home Office. The school will then issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), which is the reference number used in the visa application.

Eligibility: Who Can Apply?

To apply for a Child Student Visa, the applicant must:

  • Be aged between 4 and 17 at the time of application.
  • Hold an unconditional offer from a licensed UK independent school, confirmed with a CAS.
  • Have parental consent from their parents or legal guardians for the travel and stay in the UK.
  • Have appropriate care arrangements in place for their welfare throughout their time in the UK — outside school boarding hours and during holidays.
  • Be able to demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover course fees and living costs.

May 2025 Guardianship Rule Changes

May 2025 Guardianship Rule Changes — What Every Family Needs to Know

From 29 May 2025, significant new safeguarding requirements came into effect under the Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules (HC 733). These changes introduced, for the first time, a formal definition of a 'Nominated Guardian' in the Immigration Rules and introduced new mandatory documentation requirements for Child Student Visa applications.

Nominated Guardian: New Definition and Requirements

A Nominated Guardian is now formally defined as a person aged 18 or over who is appointed by the child's parent, legal guardian, or school as the child's carer in the UK outside of term-time and/or as the school's emergency contact in the UK. The Nominated Guardian must:

  • Be aged 18 or over — with recommendations generally for 21 or over.
  • Be a British citizen or hold settled status (Indefinite Leave to Remain or EU Settled Status) in the UK.
  • Be formally appointed by the child's parents, legal guardian, or school.
  • Not themselves be the child's parent holding a Parent of a Child Student Visa — this is a different role.

Guardians can be family members, friends, or AEGIS-accredited professional guardianship organisations. Professional guardians undergo background checks and monitoring and are increasingly recommended by schools and UKVI alike to meet the new standards.

Letter of Undertaking: New Mandatory Document

From 29 May 2025, a Letter of Undertaking from the Nominated Guardian is now a mandatory supporting document in a Child Student Visa application. This letter must confirm the nature of the guardianship arrangement, the guardian's contact details, their willingness and capacity to carry out the guardian role, and their compliance with the new safeguarding standards.

Parental Consent Letter: Expanded Requirements

The parental consent letter must now specifically confirm which of the six permissible UK living arrangements the child will enter into. Simply confirming that parents consent to the child studying in the UK is no longer sufficient — the intended care and accommodation arrangement must be explicitly stated.

New Refusal Powers

From 29 May 2025, UKVI caseworkers have broader powers to refuse Child Student Visa applications where they are not satisfied that appropriate care, living, and guardianship arrangements are in place for the child's safety. Caseworkers may also refuse where the child's intended UK carer has a relevant criminal conviction. This applies regardless of whether other eligibility requirements are met.

Parental Accompaniment and Financial Requirements

The Parent of a Child Student Visa

If your child is aged 4 to 11 and attending a UK independent school, you may accompany them to the UK under the Parent of a Child Student Visa. Key features:

  • Only one parent can hold this visa — the other parent must remain abroad.
  • Available only for children aged under 12 (the permission ends when the child turns 12).
  • The accompanying parent cannot work, study, claim benefits, or make the UK their primary home.
  • The parent must intend to return to their home country — this visa is not a route to long-term UK residence.

Once the child reaches 12, the parent's visa ends. Alternative care arrangements must be in place from that point. Parents wishing to visit (rather than accompany) their child may be eligible for a Standard Visitor Visa.

For children aged 16 and 17, they may live independently in the UK without a Nominated Guardian being mandatory, although many schools and local authorities recommend professional guardianship support regardless.

Financial Evidence Requirements

Families must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover the child's school fees and living costs. The financial evidence requirements follow a similar 28-day holding rule to the main Student Visa:

  • Outstanding course fees for the first year of study.
  • Living costs for up to nine months — the current financial thresholds apply and cover accommodation and general living expenses.
  • Additional amounts where an accompanying parent holds a Parent of a Child Student Visa.

How Long Is the Visa?

  • For children under 16 at the time of application: up to six years and four months.
  • For children aged 16 or 17 at the time of application: up to three years and four months.

The visa can be extended while the child remains in continuous education at an eligible institution. When a child turns 16, they become eligible to switch to the main Student Visa if they are continuing into further or higher education.

Work Rights

Children under 16 may not work on a Child Student Visa. Children aged 16 or 17 may work up to 10 hours per week during term time and full-time during official school holidays, subject to any restrictions set by the school.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the UK Child Student Visa?

The UK Child Student Visa is an immigration route specifically for children aged 4 to 17 who wish to study at a UK independent (fee-paying) school. It is distinct from the main Student Visa, which is for students aged 16 and over in higher education. Children attending UK state-funded schools cannot use the Child Student Visa. The visa requires a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the school, financial evidence, and appropriate care and guardianship arrangements.

Can my child attend any UK school on a Child Student Visa?

No. The Child Student Visa is only available for children studying at UK independent schools that are licensed by the Home Office as Student sponsors. Children cannot use the Child Student Visa to attend UK state-funded schools, academies, or free schools. Before applying, parents should confirm that the chosen school holds a valid Student sponsor licence by checking the Home Office register.

What are the new guardianship requirements introduced in May 2025?

In May 2025, updated rules under HC 733 strengthened the welfare requirements for Child Student Visa applicants. The key changes include: a formal 'Nominated Guardian' role must now be identified and documented; a Letter of Undertaking from the guardian confirming their responsibilities is required; six specified care arrangement options have been defined for how children under 16 may be cared for; and caseworkers have new powers to refuse applications where care arrangements do not meet the updated standards.

Does a parent need to accompany their child to the UK?

Not necessarily, but a parent of a child aged under 12 may be eligible for the Parent of a Child Student Visa — a separate visa permitting the parent to live in the UK for the same duration as the child's visa. This visa allows the parent to care for their child but does not permit the parent to work. For children aged 12 to 16 who are unaccompanied, the May 2025 guardianship framework requires appropriate care arrangements to be documented and agreed with the school.

How much money do parents need to demonstrate for a Child Student Visa?

Parents must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover the child's school fees for the first year of study (as stated on the CAS), plus living costs. Funds must have been held continuously for a 28-day period before the application date. Where a parent is also applying for a Parent of a Child Student Visa, their own financial evidence must be included in their separate application.

What happens when my child turns 16?

When a Child Student Visa holder turns 16, they become eligible to apply for the main Student Visa if they are continuing into further or higher education. The switch can be made from within the UK. The new Student Visa application will require its own CAS, financial evidence, and English language evidence as appropriate for the new course.

Do Child Student Visa holders need to demonstrate English language proficiency?

Children applying for the Child Student Visa do not need to pass an English language test in the same way as Student Visa applicants. The school's assessment of the child's ability to access the curriculum is taken as the primary indicator of language readiness. However, individual schools may have their own language requirements as part of their admissions process.

Can family members join a Child Student Visa holder in the UK?

The only family member route specifically associated with the Child Student Visa is the Parent of a Child Student Visa, available to a parent of a child under 12. Other family members cannot join on this basis. Parents wishing to visit their child on short trips may be eligible for a Standard Visitor Visa, but cannot live in the UK on that basis.
