The Marriage Visitor Visa allows overseas nationals to come to the UK, marry their partner, and return home. It is not a settlement route. Work Permit Cloud advises on eligibility, the key distinction from the Fiancé Visa, and prepares your application.
Talk to an expertThe Marriage Visitor Visa is a dedicated sub-category of the Standard Visitor Visa designed for overseas nationals who wish to come to the United Kingdom to marry their partner, or to register a civil partnership, and then return home at the end of their visit. It is the correct route for couples who want to hold their ceremony in the UK but have no immediate intention of remaining in the UK afterwards.
Important: You cannot use a standard tourist visitor visa to get married in the UK. Register offices and approved venues check immigration status before allowing marriage ceremonies to proceed. If you attempt to marry on the basis of a standard visitor entry, the ceremony will be refused. You must apply for a Marriage Visitor Visa specifically if you intend to marry or give formal notice of marriage during your visit.
The correct route depends entirely on what you intend to do after the ceremony:
The distinction matters because the two routes have fundamentally different outcomes. The Marriage Visitor Visa does not allow you to switch to any other immigration category from inside the UK. You must leave and apply from outside. If you arrive on a Marriage Visitor Visa with the intention of staying in the UK and switching to a Spouse Visa without leaving, you risk refusal of the Spouse Visa application, curtailment of your leave, and a damaging adverse immigration history. See our Partner and Family Visas hub for the full range of family immigration routes.
To qualify for a UK Marriage Visitor Visa, you must:
You must apply from the country where you are lawfully resident, not from a third country you are visiting. You cannot apply for or switch to a Marriage Visitor Visa from inside the UK.
On a Marriage Visitor Visa you may:
Marriage Visitor Visa holders may not work in the UK, access public funds, study, or extend their stay beyond the visa validity period. You cannot switch to any other visa category from inside the UK while on a Marriage Visitor Visa.
A Marriage Visitor Visa permits a stay of up to six months. This is also the maximum — the visa cannot be extended from within the UK. All necessary arrangements, including giving notice and holding the ceremony, must take place within this period. You must leave the UK before your visa expires.
A Marriage Visitor Visa application requires evidence that your plans are genuine, your relationship is real, and your intention to leave the UK is credible. Key supporting documents typically include:
If you plan to live in the UK with your partner following your marriage, the Marriage Visitor Visa is not the right route. You should consider the Fiancé(e) Visa, which is designed for exactly this situation: coming to the UK to marry, then switching to a Spouse Visa from inside the UK without having to return home first. Following the switch, the five-year route to Indefinite Leave to Remain begins, and after ILR, British citizenship may be available. Work Permit Cloud can advise on which route best fits your situation and long-term plans.
We assist couples at every stage of the Marriage Visitor Visa process: assessing whether the Marriage Visitor Visa or the Fiancé Visa is appropriate for your circumstances, advising on the documentation needed to demonstrate a genuine relationship and a clear intention to leave, and preparing a structured application.
If your long-term plans involve settling in the UK with your partner, we can also advise on the full family immigration pathway from Fiancé Visa through to Indefinite Leave to Remain and British citizenship. Book an appointment or contact us, or explore our Partner and Family Visas hub for further guidance.

FAQ
The Marriage Visitor Visa is a sub-category of the Standard Visitor Visa for overseas nationals who wish to come to the UK to marry or register a civil partnership, and then return home. It is distinct from the Fiancé Visa, which is for those who intend to stay in the UK with their partner after the wedding. You cannot marry in the UK on a standard tourist visitor visa.
These are two distinct routes with very different outcomes. The Marriage Visitor Visa (under the Standard Visitor rules) is for overseas nationals who wish to marry in the UK and then leave. It is not a settlement route. The Fiancé(e) Visa (under Appendix FM) is for overseas nationals who intend to marry in the UK and then stay, switching to a Spouse Visa from inside the UK. Choosing the wrong route can jeopardise your ability to remain in the UK.
A Marriage Visitor Visa allows a stay of up to six months. The visa cannot be extended from within the UK. All arrangements — including giving formal notice and holding the ceremony — must be completed within this period.
Yes. You may give formal notice of marriage or civil partnership at a register office in England and Wales. Notice must be given at least 29 clear days before the ceremony. Specific requirements vary in Scotland and Northern Ireland. You must give notice within the validity period of your visa.
Key documents include: confirmation of venue or register office booking; evidence of your genuine relationship (correspondence, photographs, shared history); evidence that you are legally free to marry; financial evidence showing you can support yourself; evidence of ties to your home country and intention to return (employment, property, family obligations); and your valid passport.
No. The Marriage Visitor Visa does not allow you to switch to any other immigration category from inside the UK. If you intend to remain in the UK with your partner after the ceremony, you must leave the UK and apply for a Spouse Visa from your home country. If your plan is to stay in the UK after marriage, the Fiancé(e) Visa is the correct route before travelling to the UK.
No. You must apply for a Marriage Visitor Visa from outside the UK, from the country where you are lawfully resident. You cannot apply for or switch to a Marriage Visitor Visa from inside the UK.
If after your wedding you decide you want to live in the UK with your partner, you must leave the UK after your Marriage Visitor Visa expires and apply for a Spouse Visa from your home country. Once your Spouse Visa is granted, you enter the five-year route to Indefinite Leave to Remain. Following ILR, British citizenship may be available after 12 months.
