The UK tourist visa is the informal name for the Standard Visitor Visa. Work Permit Cloud helps applicants prepare a credible application, covering financial evidence, genuine visitor ties, and the post-ETA landscape for non-visa nationals.
Talk to an expertThe UK tourist visa is the informal term for the Standard Visitor Visa, the immigration route that covers short-term visits to the United Kingdom for leisure, tourism, family visits, and a wide range of other permitted purposes. Technically there is no separate tourist visa category. The correct route is the Standard Visitor Visa, set out in Appendix V of the UK Immigration Rules. Whether you are visiting for a holiday, to see friends or family, to attend a wedding, to watch a sporting event, or to receive private medical treatment, all of these purposes sit under the same Standard Visitor route.
Over 2.2 million visitor visas were granted in the year ending June 2025, but refusal rates vary significantly by nationality and application quality. Getting the application right at the first attempt is important: a refused application remains on your immigration record and must be declared in all future applications.
Whether you need to apply for a Standard Visitor Visa before travel depends entirely on your nationality. Use the GOV.UK visa checker to confirm what is required for your country.
Crucially, the ETA is not a visa and does not change the rules that govern what you can do in the UK. Whether you enter with a visa or an ETA, the same Standard Visitor rules apply: the same permitted activities, the same six-month limit, and the same requirement to leave at the end of your visit. Holding an ETA does not guarantee entry. Border Force retains the discretion to refuse admission at the port of entry.
Every Standard Visitor Visa application is assessed against a single central requirement: the Home Office must be satisfied that you are a genuine visitor. This means convincing a caseworker, based on your documents and circumstances, that:
The most common reason for refusal is failure to satisfy the caseworker on the genuineness of the visit. This often comes down to weak evidence of ties to the home country: the factors that make it credible you will return home rather than remain in the UK. These ties can include employment, property, family responsibilities, financial commitments, and travel history. The quality and consistency of your evidence matters more than the quantity.

As a Standard Visitor, you may not:
Most Standard Visitors are granted permission to stay for up to six months per visit. The exact duration is at the discretion of the Border Force officer on arrival. Some specialist categories, such as academics and those receiving private medical treatment, may be eligible for permissions of up to 12 months.
Long-term visitor visas are available for those who visit the UK frequently, typically valid for two, five, or ten years. These allow multiple visits within the validity period, with each individual visit still limited to a maximum of six months. Repeatedly staying close to the six-month limit, or spending more than approximately half the year in the UK across multiple visits, may raise concerns that you are living in the UK rather than visiting.
Visitor visa refusals do not carry a full right of appeal in most cases. If refused, the practical route is to address the reasons given in the refusal notice and submit a new, stronger application. A refused application stays on your immigration record and must be declared in all future applications, so getting the initial application right is essential.
Preparing a strong visitor visa application requires presenting the right evidence in a coherent, credible way, not simply assembling a pile of documents. Work Permit Cloud's advisors review your circumstances, advise on the strength of your genuine visitor evidence, help identify potential vulnerabilities in your case, and prepare a structured application that addresses the Home Office's key concerns.
Whether you are applying for the first time or reapplying after a refusal, we provide practical support at every stage. Book an appointment or contact us to get started. You can also read more on our immigration blog.

FAQ
The UK tourist visa is the colloquial name for the Standard Visitor Visa — the immigration route for nationals of visa-required countries who wish to visit the UK for holidays, to see family and friends, to attend cultural or sporting events, or to receive private medical treatment. It allows stays of up to six months per visit and is assessed by the Home Office against the genuine visitor test.
Nationals of countries that are not on the UK's visa-exempt list must apply for a Standard Visitor Visa before travelling. Nationals of EU member states, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries do not need a visa but must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travel. Use the GOV.UK visa checker to confirm requirements for your specific nationality.
Up to six months per visit. You can visit the UK multiple times on a long-term visitor visa (valid for up to 10 years), but you must not spend the majority of your time in the UK and each visit must be for a genuine temporary purpose. You cannot extend a Standard Visitor Visa from within the UK.
The genuine visitor test is the assessment applied by Entry Clearance Officers to every Standard Visitor Visa application. To meet it, you must show: (1) a genuine purpose for your visit that is permitted under the Standard Visitor rules; (2) that your visit is temporary and you intend to leave when it ends; (3) that you have adequate funds to cover your costs without recourse to public funds; and (4) strong ties to your home country — employment, property, family, or other commitments — that make it credible you will return home.
Core documents include: a valid passport, completed online application form, biometric enrolment, financial evidence (bank statements typically covering 3 to 6 months), evidence of the purpose of your visit (hotel bookings, invitation letter from family or friends, event tickets), evidence of employment or other ties to your home country, and proof of travel insurance if recommended for your country. Additional documents may be required depending on your individual circumstances.
Generally no. Switching from a Standard Visitor Visa to a work or study visa from within the UK is not permitted. You would normally need to leave the UK and apply for the appropriate visa from your home country. There are limited exceptions, but these apply to specific circumstances and should not be relied upon without professional advice.
The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) applies to non-visa nationals — countries whose citizens do not need a visa for short UK visits. The ETA is a digital pre-travel permission costing £16. It does not replace the Standard Visitor Visa: nationals who require a visa must still apply for one. The ETA applies only to those who were already visa-exempt.
