What Are the UK Skilled Worker Visas?

The Skilled Worker Visa is the UK's main route for overseas nationals taking up skilled, sponsored employment in the United Kingdom. Since the July 2025 reforms, the most significant overhaul since Brexit, the route has become substantially more selective. From 22 July 2025, the minimum skill level for new Skilled Worker applications increased to RQF Level 6 (degree level), removing around 180 previously eligible occupations from the general route. English language requirements also tightened from 8 January 2026, with new applicants now needing to demonstrate proficiency at CEFR Level B2 rather than B1.

Despite these changes, the Skilled Worker route remains the most-used long-term work visa in the UK, with several important sub-routes available for specific professions. The Health and Care Worker Visa sits within the Skilled Worker framework and offers significant advantages for qualified NHS and healthcare professionals: a reduced application fee, exemption from the Immigration Health Surcharge, and fast-tracked processing. However, care worker and senior care worker roles are no longer open to new overseas applicants from 22 July 2025. Those already in the UK may extend or switch under limited transitional arrangements until 22 July 2028.

Separately, the T2 Minister of Religion Visa is a distinct but structurally similar sponsored work route for religious leaders, missionaries, and members of religious orders in mainly pastoral roles within UK faith organisations. It sits outside the standard Skilled Worker route but shares the same points-based structure, English language requirements (B2 from January 2026), and pathway to Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Work Permit Cloud's IAA-regulated immigration advisors support workers and employers across all three routes, from initial eligibility assessment and sponsor licence checks, to preparing the Certificate of Sponsorship and submitting the visa. Whether you are a skilled professional seeking sponsored employment, a healthcare organisation navigating the post-July 2025 rules, or a faith community wishing to sponsor a religious leader, select the relevant service below to find out how we can assist. Check the full list of eligible occupations at Appendix Skilled Occupations on GOV.UK.

£41,700 Minimum Salary (from July 2025)

From 22 July 2025, the general salary threshold for the Skilled Worker Visa is £41,700 per year or the going rate for the occupation code, whichever is higher. Reduced thresholds apply for PhD holders and new entrants.

RQF Level 6 Required

Only degree-level (RQF Level 6+) roles qualify for the standard Skilled Worker route from July 2025. Around 180 previously eligible occupations at Levels 3 to 5 were removed from the general route on 22 July 2025.

B2 English from January 2026

From 8 January 2026, new Skilled Worker applicants must demonstrate CEFR Level B2 English proficiency, raised from the previous B1 requirement. This also applies to the Minister of Religion Visa (T2) route.

All three routes require a valid Home Office sponsor licence before any Certificate of Sponsorship can be assigned. After five years of qualifying residence, all three lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain, and after a further 12 months, British citizenship by naturalisation may be available. Eligible dependent family members can also join the visa holder in the UK on standard Skilled Worker roles. For alternative routes, see the Scale-up Visa (for high-growth businesses), Global Business Mobility (for intra-company transfers), and our UKVI Compliant HR Software for employer compliance. The Immigration Skills Charge applies to most Skilled Worker sponsorship, see the GOV.UK guidance for current rates.

FAQ

Common questions

What changed about the UK Skilled Worker Visa in July 2025?

On 22 July 2025, the Skilled Worker route underwent its most significant overhaul since Brexit. Three key changes applied to all Certificates of Sponsorship assigned on or after that date: (1) the minimum skill level for sponsored roles increased to RQF Level 6 (degree level), removing approximately 180 previously eligible occupations; (2) the general salary threshold increased to £41,700 per year or the going rate, whichever is higher; and (3) roles at RQF Levels 3 to 5 can no longer bring new dependent family members to the UK, even if they remain eligible under transitional arrangements.

What is the current salary threshold for the UK Skilled Worker Visa?

From 22 July 2025, the general salary threshold is £41,700 per year or the going rate for the relevant occupation code, whichever is higher. Lower thresholds apply to specific applicant types: PhD holders may qualify at £37,500 (relevant PhD) or £33,400 (STEM PhD); new entrants under 26, recent graduates, or those in approved training may qualify at £33,400. The applicable threshold is always the higher of the relevant option and the going rate.

What does RQF Level 6 mean for Skilled Worker eligibility?

RQF Level 6 is equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree. For Skilled Worker purposes, it is the skill level assigned to the specific occupation code (SOC code) of the role being sponsored, not necessarily the qualification held by the applicant. The role itself, based on its duties and SOC code, must be classified at degree level or above. Approximately 180 roles previously eligible at RQF Levels 3 to 5 were removed from the standard route on 22 July 2025. Check your occupation at Appendix Skilled Occupations on GOV.UK.

What is the English language requirement for the Skilled Worker Visa?

From 8 January 2026, new Skilled Worker applicants must demonstrate CEFR Level B2 English proficiency. This can be met by passing an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) at B2 level, holding a degree taught in English at an equivalent level, or on the basis of nationality if from a majority English-speaking country. B2 is a higher standard than the previous B1 requirement.

What is the difference between the Skilled Worker Visa, the Minister of Religion Visa, and the Health and Care Worker Visa?

All three are sponsored work routes. The Skilled Worker Visa is the standard route for degree-level roles across all sectors. The Health and Care Worker Visa is a sub-category of the Skilled Worker route for NHS and qualified healthcare professionals — it offers reduced fees and IHS exemption but is subject to sector-specific restrictions including the closure of care worker roles from July 2025. The Minister of Religion Visa (T2) is a separate, structurally similar route exclusively for religious leaders and missionaries in mainly pastoral roles. It operates outside the standard Skilled Worker framework.

Does an employer need a sponsor licence to hire someone on a Skilled Worker Visa?

Yes. The UK employer must hold a valid A-rated Home Office sponsor licence for the Skilled Worker route before assigning any Certificate of Sponsorship. If you do not yet hold a licence, you must apply and obtain one before the worker can apply for their visa. See our Sponsor Licence Application page for guidance. For official Home Office guidance on sponsoring a worker, visit GOV.UK.

Does the Skilled Worker Visa lead to UK settlement?

Yes. After five continuous years of lawful residence in the UK on the Skilled Worker route, workers can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Following ILR, British citizenship by naturalisation may be available after 12 months.
