What Are the UK Study Visa Routes?

The United Kingdom remains one of the world's most sought-after destinations for international education, home to some of the highest-ranked universities globally. Whether you are an adult student enrolling in a degree or postgraduate programme, a child starting secondary education at a UK independent school, or a recent graduate looking to extend your stay and build your career after completing your studies, there is a dedicated UK immigration route designed for your situation.

The Student Visa is the main route for international students aged 16 and over studying at a UK licensed institution. It requires a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your university or college, proof of English language proficiency, now at CEFR Level B2 from 8 January 2026 for most applicants, and evidence of sufficient funds covering your first year's tuition and living costs. All successful applicants now receive a digital eVisa rather than a physical Biometric Residence Permit.

The Child Student Visa serves a distinct need: it enables children aged 4 to 17 to study at UK independent (fee-paying) schools. Unlike the main Student Visa, which is for university and further education, the Child Student Visa is specifically for independent school pupils. Updated guardianship and welfare requirements introduced in May 2025 have strengthened the care arrangements that must be in place, particularly for unaccompanied younger students. A parent of a child under 12 may be eligible to accompany their child on a separate Parent of a Child Student Visa.

The Graduate Visa gives international students who have successfully completed a UK degree the right to stay in the UK and work, or look for work, after graduating. Currently, bachelor's and master's graduates receive two years, and PhD graduates receive three years. However, this is changing: from 1 January 2027, new Graduate Visa applications from bachelor's and master's graduates will be limited to 18 months. Students who apply before that date will still receive the full two-year permission. PhD graduates are unaffected.

Work Permit Cloud's IAA-regulated immigration advisors support students, families, and graduates at every stage of the UK study journey. Select the relevant service below to find out how we can assist. Not sure if you need a visa? Check on GOV.UK based on your nationality.

B2 English from January 2026

From 8 January 2026, Student Visa applicants must demonstrate CEFR Level B2 English proficiency, raised from the previous B1 requirement. This applies to new applicants and those switching into the Student route.

No Dependants for Most Students

Since January 2024, most Student Visa holders cannot bring dependent family members to the UK. Exceptions apply only to students on PhD and postgraduate research programmes at compliant institutions, and government-sponsored undergraduates.

Graduate Visa: Act Before January 2027

From 1 January 2027, the Graduate Visa is reduced to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates. Students who apply before this date still receive the full two years. PhD graduates are unaffected and retain three years.

Explore our three study visa services below. Our Student Visa service covers the full application process for university and higher education students. Our Child Student Visa service supports families with children at UK independent schools. And our Graduate Visa service helps recent graduates make the most of their post-study work rights before the January 2027 reduction takes effect. After your graduate visa, many students transition to the Skilled Worker Visa once they secure sponsored employment, leading to a settlement pathway. For student dependent visa rules, entrepreneurial graduates considering the Innovator Founder Visa, exceptional academic talent exploring the Global Talent Visa, or long-term settlement via ILR, our team can advise on all routes.

FAQ

Common questions

What UK study visas are available for international students?

There are three main study-related UK immigration routes. The Student Visa is for international students aged 16 and over studying at a UK-licensed university, college, or higher education institution. The Child Student Visa is specifically for children aged 4 to 17 studying at UK independent (fee-paying) schools. The Graduate Visa allows those who have completed a UK degree to remain in the UK and work after graduation.

What is the English language requirement for a UK Student Visa in 2026?

From 8 January 2026, new Student Visa applicants must demonstrate CEFR Level B2 English proficiency, raised from the previous B1 requirement. This can be met by passing an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) at B2 level, holding a degree taught in English, or on the basis of nationality if from a majority English-speaking country. Students already in the UK extending their Student Visa may have different requirements depending on when their original visa was granted.

Is the Graduate Visa being reduced to 18 months?

Yes. The UK government has confirmed that from 1 January 2027, new Graduate Visa applications from bachelor's and master's graduates will receive 18 months of post-study permission, reduced from the current 2 years. PhD graduates are unaffected and will continue to receive 3 years. Students who apply for the Graduate Visa before 1 January 2027 will still receive the full 2-year permission. If you complete your course in 2026, applying before that date is strongly advisable.

Can Student Visa holders bring their family to the UK?

Since January 2024, most Student Visa holders cannot bring dependants to the UK. The main exceptions are: students on postgraduate research programmes (PhD and research master's degrees) at institutions with a track record of compliance, provided the course lasts at least nine months; and government-sponsored students on fully-funded undergraduate programmes. All other students cannot bring dependants. See our Dependent Visa page for full detail.

Can I work while studying on a UK Student Visa?

Yes, within limits. Student Visa holders are generally permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time, and full-time during vacations and official holiday periods. Work as a self-employed person or as a director of a company is not generally permitted. Exceeding your permitted work hours is a breach of visa conditions and can affect future immigration applications including the Graduate Visa and Skilled Worker Visa.

What happens after I finish my UK degree?

Most international students who complete a qualifying UK degree can apply for the Graduate Visa without a job offer, giving them 2 years (or 3 years for PhD graduates) to work unrestricted in the UK. Note: from 1 January 2027 this reduces to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates. After the Graduate Visa, many graduates switch to the Skilled Worker Visa once they secure appropriate employment, which leads to a settlement pathway. For entrepreneurial graduates, the Innovator Founder Visa is available; for those with exceptional talent, the Global Talent Visa is an option.
