What Is the UK Standard Visitor Visa?

The UK Standard Visitor Visa is the single immigration route that covers the broadest range of short-term visits to the United Kingdom. Whether you are planning a holiday, attending business meetings, accompanying a family member for private medical treatment, or coming to marry your UK-based partner, the Standard Visitor Visa, or the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for non-visa nationals, is the route that governs your entry.

Despite its versatility, the Standard Visitor Visa is tightly defined. It permits stays of up to six months per visit, but the activities you can carry out are strictly set out in Appendix V of the UK Immigration Rules. You cannot work for a UK employer, you cannot access public funds, and you cannot use a standard visitor visa to remain in the UK long-term. The most common reason for refusal is failing to satisfy the Home Office that you are a genuine visitor, meaning you have clear reasons for your trip, sufficient funds to support yourself, and strong ties to your home country that make it credible you will leave when your visit ends.

In 2026, the landscape for visitor visas has also shifted with the full rollout of the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme. Non-visa nationals, including nationals of the EU, the US, Canada, and Australia, who previously could travel to the UK without any prior permission must now obtain an ETA before travel. The ETA is not a visa but it is a mandatory pre-travel check. Visa nationals must still apply for a Standard Visitor Visa in advance. Use the GOV.UK visa checker to confirm what you need.

Work Permit Cloud assists individuals and families across three of the most-searched visitor visa categories. Our Tourist Visa service helps personal visitors prepare a strong application demonstrating genuine intent and financial readiness. Our Business Visit service supports professionals who need to attend UK meetings, conferences, or conduct permitted business activities without crossing into work that requires sponsorship. And our UK Marriage Visitor Visa service guides couples and individuals through the Marriage Visitor Visa, the Standard Visitor sub-category for overseas nationals who wish to marry in the UK and then return home.

Up to 6 Months Per Visit

The Standard Visitor Visa permits stays of up to six months. It cannot be extended from within the UK, and you cannot switch from a visitor visa to a work or study visa while you are in the UK.

The Genuine Visitor Test

Every application is assessed against three factors: a genuine purpose for your visit, sufficient funds to support yourself, and strong ties to your home country that make it credible you will return home when your visit ends.

ETA Required from 2025

Since January 2025, non-visa nationals including EU, US, Canadian and Australian citizens must obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travel. This replaces the previous visa-free arrangement for short visits.

Select the service that best matches your situation below. If your plans involve settling in the UK permanently after visiting, for example through marriage, our Partner and Family Visas hub covers the longer-term settlement routes. For full details on what is and is not permitted under the Standard Visitor Visa, read the official guidance at GOV.UK Standard Visitor Visa, and check whether you need a visa based on your nationality before applying.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the UK Standard Visitor Visa?

The UK Standard Visitor Visa is the immigration route that allows nationals of visa-required countries to travel to the UK for short-term visits of up to six months. Permitted purposes include tourism, visiting family and friends, attending business meetings, receiving private medical treatment, and attending weddings. It does not allow you to work for a UK employer, study for an extended period, or remain beyond the permitted stay.

Do I need a visa to visit the UK?

It depends on your nationality. Nationals of many countries require a Standard Visitor Visa before travelling to the UK. Nationals of countries such as EU member states, the US, Canada, and Australia do not need a visa for short visits but must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travel, a new requirement in force since January 2025. Use the GOV.UK visa checker to confirm what you need based on your nationality.

What is the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and who needs it?

The ETA is a digital pre-travel permission for non-visa nationals travelling to the UK. It costs £16 per person and is linked electronically to the traveller's passport. Nationals of EU countries, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries are now required to hold a valid ETA before travelling to the UK for short visits. Visa nationals are not affected and must still apply for a Standard Visitor Visa. Apply at GOV.UK — Apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation.

How long can I stay in the UK on a Standard Visitor Visa?

The Standard Visitor Visa permits stays of up to six months per visit. You cannot extend a Standard Visitor Visa from within the UK, and you cannot switch from a visitor visa to a work or study visa while in the UK, with very limited exceptions.

What is the most common reason UK visitor visas are refused?

The most common reason for refusal is failing the genuine visitor test. This means the Entry Clearance Officer was not satisfied that: you have a genuine reason for your visit, you have sufficient funds to support yourself without recourse to public funds, and you have strong ties to your home country such as employment, property, or family commitments that make it credible you will leave the UK when your visit ends.

What is the difference between a Tourist Visa, a Business Visit Visa, and a Marriage Visitor Visa?

All three sit under the Standard Visitor Visa framework but serve different purposes. The Tourist Visa covers personal visits such as holidays and family visits. The Business Visit Visa covers travel for permitted business purposes such as meetings and conferences. The UK Marriage Visitor Visa is actually a distinct route under Appendix FM for overseas nationals who intend to marry a UK citizen or settled person and remain in the UK. It is a settlement-pathway route, not a standard visitor route.

Can I work in the UK on a Standard Visitor Visa?

No. Working for a UK employer is not permitted on a Standard Visitor Visa. Business visitors may attend meetings, negotiate contracts, and conduct certain permitted activities listed in Appendix Visitor: Permitted Activities, but none of these constitute employment. If you intend to work in the UK, you need an appropriate work visa such as the Skilled Worker Visa.
